Today, the Independent Party of Oregon announced the names of candidates who are seeking the party's nominations to run for seats in the Oregon State Legislature.
77 candidates are seeking the party's nomination for state legislative office, including 39 Democrats, 32 Republicans, 5 Independents, and a Libertarian. Of these 77 candidates, 60 of them already won their their own major party primaries. 36 of them are incumbent legislators. The party expects to have 20 contested races for its nominations, including 9 in the Oregon Senate and 11 in the Oregon House. Read more ...
The party plans to hold an internet election (e-vote) in July to choose its nominees.
Candidates for statewide and congressional offices will be announced tomorrow (6/4/2010).
BACKGROUND
The Independent Party of Oregon was formed by petition and recognized by the State of Oregon in January 2007. The party currently has more than 54,000 members, making it the third largest political party in Oregon. In 2009, the party played a leading role in the passage of legislation to allow candidates to list the names of up to three nominating parties on the November ballot.
